The San Antonio Spurs have secured the future of their franchise, agreeing to a five-year rookie-scale contract extension with Victor Wembanyama that is projected to be worth $252 million. The extension begins with the 2027-28 season following the completion of his rookie contract and includes a player option in the final year.

While the contract is one of the richest rookie extensions in NBA history, the most significant aspect may be what Wembanyama chose not to do.

By signing a standard 25 percent maximum extension rather than waiting to qualify for a larger "Rose Rule" contract, Wembanyama gives the Spurs an estimated $50 million in additional salary cap flexibility over the life of the deal.
