Kyler Murray Is Vikings’ QB1. Now What for J.J. McCarthy?

The Minnesota Vikings have made their decision at quarterback. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has named Kyler Murray the starter for the 2026 season, putting J.J. McCarthy in an unfamiliar position after entering the offseason with an opportunity to establish himself as Minnesota’s long-term answer. For Murray, the decision represents a fresh start after seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. For McCarthy, it raises a bigger question about where his career goes from here.

Minnesota selected McCarthy with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, expecting him to become the franchise quarterback eventually. His development, however, has been anything but conventional. A torn meniscus ended his rookie season before it began, costing him the entire 2024 campaign. He finally received an opportunity to start in 2025, but his limited NFL experience remained a major factor as Minnesota evaluated its quarterback situation heading into 2026.

The Vikings’ decision to start Murray shouldn't automatically be viewed as the organization giving up on McCarthy. O’Connell has continued to speak positively about the young quarterback’s development, even while choosing Murray to lead the offense. McCarthy is still only 23 years old, and his path to becoming a productive NFL quarterback doesn't have to end because he failed to win this competition. What has changed is the timeline. Instead of developing through weekly starts, McCarthy will now have to improve while preparing behind a veteran quarterback.

Experience gave Murray an obvious advantage. The former No. 1 overall pick has spent seven seasons as an NFL starter and has already experienced the pressures that come with leading a franchise. He has thrown for more than 20,000 career yards, recorded more than 100 touchdown passes and earned two Pro Bowl selections. McCarthy simply cannot match that résumé yet. For a Minnesota team trying to compete immediately, Murray provides an experienced option for O’Connell’s offense while allowing the Vikings more time to determine exactly what they have in McCarthy.

That doesn't mean Minnesota should immediately begin shopping McCarthy. Trading him now could amount to selling low on a quarterback the organization invested a top-10 draft pick in just two years ago. Quality quarterback depth is also valuable in the NFL, and keeping McCarthy gives Minnesota insurance if Murray struggles or misses time. Murray joined the Vikings on a one-year contract, meaning Minnesota hasn't necessarily made a long-term commitment to him either. The Vikings can attempt to win with Murray while continuing to evaluate McCarthy without forcing themselves into a permanent decision today.

McCarthy's response will be important. Losing a starting job can become a defining moment for a young quarterback, particularly one who entered the league with expectations as high as McCarthy did. He now has an opportunity to improve his timing, decision-making, and command of the offense without carrying the weekly responsibility of being QB1. He also has to remain prepared because quarterback situations can change quickly during an NFL season. An injury, a stretch of poor play or another unexpected development could put McCarthy back on the field.

The larger decision may not come until after the season. If Murray performs well and leads Minnesota where it wants to go, the Vikings could explore keeping him beyond 2026. If Murray struggles, Minnesota could reopen the door for McCarthy or look elsewhere for its next quarterback. McCarthy's performance in practice and any game opportunities he receives will be part of that evaluation.

For now, McCarthy remains a Viking, and his story in Minnesota isn't necessarily finished. But his situation has unquestionably changed. Being selected in the first round allowed him to become Minnesota's franchise quarterback; it never guaranteed that the job would remain his.

McCarthy is no longer trying to prove that he deserves to keep the Vikings’ starting quarterback job. Now he has to prove that he deserves another opportunity to win it.
